American Universities and Colleges

Higher education is given in colleges and universities. The average course is four years. Students choose their "major" and a number of "electives". Typically, an undergraduate student has to earn a number of "credits", about 120, to receive the Bachelor’s degree at the end of four years’ study. One credit usually equals one hour of class per week in a single course which lasts 10 to 16 weeks-the length of a "semester". About half of the students are awarded the Bachelor’s degree when they leave university. Then the students may go on to graduate school and with a year or two of further study get a master’s degree. After another year or two of study and research, they may get a still higher degree as doctor of philosophy. Higher education trains people to become teachers, nurses, engineers, dentists or do other professional work. Lawyers and doctors must go to school longer than four years.

[单项选择]
Most big corporations were once run by individual capitalists: by one shareholder with enough stock to dominate the board of directors and to dictate policy, a shareholder who was usually also the chief executive officer. Owning a majority or controlling interest, these capitalists did not have to concentrate on reshuffling assets to fight off raids from financial vikings. They were free to make a living by producing new products or by producing old products more cheaply. Just as important, they were locked into their roles. They could not very well sell out for a quick profit—dumping large stock holdings on the market would have simply depressed the stock’s price and cost them their jobs as captains of industry. So instead they sought to enhance their personal wealth by investing—by improving the long-run efficiency and productivity of the company.

A. (A) these shareholders and corporate managers like dominant capitalists have rights to manage their corporations
B. (B) capitalists actually hold the stock of large U.S. corporations______.
C. (C) these financial institutions cannot legally become real capitalists who control what they own
D. (D) these financial institutions legally have chances to become real capitalists
