As the editor of a science magazine--a
fanny one--I was continually besieged by people who wanted ray help in winning a
Nobel Prize. I always explained that I had no influence on these
matters, but they invariably told me in great detail what they’d done and why
they deserved a prize. In some cases, they were correct. They deserved a prize
all right, but not a Nobel Prize. And so, with the help of some friends and
colleagues, I started the annual Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony. The
first was held in October 1991. Now each year the science humor magazine I

Traditionally, the study of history has
had fixed boundaries and focal points—periods, countries, dramatic events, and
great leaders. It also has had clear and firm notions of scholarly procedure.,
how one inquires into a historical problem, how one presents and documents one’s
findings, what constitutes admissible and adequate proof. Anyone
who has followed recent historical literature can testify to the revolution that
is taking place in historical studies. The currently fashionable subjects come
directly from the sociology catalog: childhood, work, leisure. The new subjects
are accompanied by new methods. Where history once was primarily narrative, it
is now entirely analytic. The old questions "What happened " and "How did it
happen " have given way to the question "Why did it happen " Prominent amon A. The approach of psychohistorians to historical study is currently in vogue even though it lacks the rigor and verifiability of traditional historical method. B. Traditional historians can benefit from studying the techniques and findings of psychoistorians. C. Areas of sociological study such as childhood and work are of little interest to traditional historians. D. The psychological assessment of an individual’s behavior and attitudes is more informative than the details of his or her daily life.

Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, Magic
Mountain, the State Fair, amusement park…all of these are great family
destinations, yet the cost of the admission ticket alone can put a severe crimp
in the family budget. Once at the park, children are so tempted by the wide
array of food and gift choices that a day intended for family fun can sometimes
turn into an unpleasant nag lest. While it is a parent’s job to say "no" at
appropriate times, saying "no" during a special day intended for family
togetherness can definitely diminish the fun for both adult and child.
When our children were in early elementary school, we came up with a plan
that took the "yes" and "no" spending decision out of our hands, and placed it
into theirs. We were off to Disneyland, and during previous
visits our son would badger us for a treat each time w A. spending responsibility B. the cost of the admission ticket C. the family budget D. great family destinations

report came out the other day, and it shows the Gross Domestic Product--the
GDP--was up more than 7.2 percent.., the highest one-quarter jump in 20 years.
But the GDP is a measure of what HAS happened. The question is: what about the
future Well, the same day the GDP report came out, the Atlanta Business
Chronicle was reporting increased profits from several of Atlanta’s largest
corporations: BellSouth, Southern Company, Georgia Pacific, Equifax, Agco. UPS
(United Parcel Service) showed a 28 percent increase, and that one is especially
important because shipping companies are generally recognized as early
indicators of things to come in the business world. And, sure enough, the
economists arc already predicting a strong fourth quarter. One of the best, the
Conference Board, is indicating very good economic news way out ahead.
The politicians, of course, are contending it is the gove A. Because it makes up the major part of American economy. B. Because it indicates the good economic news. C. Because it helps to predict other events in the business. D. Because it affects the performance of other industry.

observations about punishment were by no means without their warrant at St.
James’s School. Flogging with the birch in accordance with the Eton fashion was
a great feature in its curriculum. But I am sure no Eton boy, and certainly no
Harrow boy of my day, ever received such a cruel flogging as this Headmaster was
accustomed to inflict upon the little boys who were in his care and power. They
exceeded in severity anything that would be tolerated in any of the
Reformatories under the Home Office. My reading in later life has supplied me
with some possible explanations of his temperament. Two or three times a month
the whole school was marshalled in the library, and one or more delinquents were
hauled off to an adjoining apartment by the two head boys, and there
flogged until they bled freely, while the rest sat quaking, listening to their
screams .... How I hated this school, and what a lif A. playing war games B. dressing up like a soldier C. reading war stories D. talking to soldiers
