Passage One
For millions of people, the American dream of owning a home seems to be slipping out of reach:
"Maybe young couples can no longer afford to buy a ready-made house as their parents did," says 40-year-old building instructor Pat Hennin. "But they can still have a home. Like their pioneer ancestors, they can build it themselves, and at less than half the cost of a ready-made house."

High Falls, New Jersey. "If you have patience and the carpentry skill to make a bookcase, you can build a house."
An astonishing 50 percent of these owner-builders hammer every nail, lay every pipe, and wire every switch with their o

Passage One
Are some people born clever, and others born stupid Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experiences Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with, The closer the blood relationship between two people, the most closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, i
A. pick up any two persons
B. choose two persons who are relatives
C. take out two different persons
D. choose two persons with different intelligence

City life is not always a bad thing, but many experts worry about this process of urbanization (城市化 ). A new report says that process is having a huge effect on human health and the quality of the environment. These are areas of poverty, slums that generally lack basic services like clean water, or even permanent housing. More than 60 million people are added to cities and surrounding areas each year, mostly in slums in developing countries. The international community has been too slow to recognize the growth of urban poverty. Policy makers need to increase investments in education, health care and other areas.
The report talks about some success

B. The two issues of poverty reduction and the environment have often been connected
C. Environmental collapse is a result of economic development
D. Environmental collapse is affecting the possibility for growt
