I arrived my new home was a rambling farmstead surrounded by acres of untamed garden. I worked four days a week and spent my leisure time cycling along the country lanes and swimming in the Baltic. Mercifully, I didn’t have to cook for the children, just re-heat food that their mother had prepared. Before becoming an au-pair, I’d never worked with either animal or children, and had certainly never changed a nappy. Above all, I learnt the wily arts of negotiation and compromise-I’ve never made so many deals. Not bad considering the projectile vomiting, the food fights and the tantrums. And that was just I. The kids were all right though.
