[填空题]

In this section, you’ll read a passage about a famous painter in the 20th century. Read it carefully and then answer the questions after it in the fewest possible words.
Grandma Moses is among the most celebrated twentieth century painters of the United States, yet she had barely started painting before she was in her late, seventies. As she once said of herself: "I would never sit bank in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me." No one could have had a more productive old age.
She was born Anna Mary Robertson on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. ("We came in bunches, like radishes.")At twelve she left home and was in domestic service until at twenty-- seven, she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.

Directions: Read the following passage carefully and then paraphrase the numbered and underlined parts. ("Paraphrase" means "to explain the meaning in your own English".)
Genius
The greatest results in life are usually attained by simple means, and the exercise of ordinary qualities. The common life of every day, with its cares, necessities, and duties, affords ample opportunity for acquiring experience of the best kind; and (56) its most beaten paths provide the true worker with abundant scope for effort and room for self-improvement. (57) The road of human welfare lies along the old highway of steadfast well-doing; and they who are the most persistent, and work in the truest spirit, will usually be the most successful.
Fortune has often been blamed for her blindness; but fortune is not so blind as men are. (58) Those who look into practical life will find that fortune

Living in Harmony with Animals

If you are looking to help animals, look no further than your day-to-day activities. Every day offers new opportunities to live more humanely. You don’t have to make radical changes—even small changes can make a big difference. The three Rs of humane living—reduce, refine, replace—can help you make choices. Here’s an example of how to apply the three Rs to the food you eat. Reduce the amount of meat, eggs, and dairy products in your diet; refine your eating habits by choosing more humanely produced options; and replace animal products with vegetarian choices.

Small is beautiful. That, at least, is the conclusion of new research examining how satisfied secretaries are in different sized firms. "We have found that people who work for small or medium-sized companies work harder and are more committed," says Catrin Morgan, author of one of the latest studies in this field. "The smaller the environment, the bigger the part you play as an individual, and the more people notice your absence."
This will come as a surprise to many secretaries
