Mr. Jones: What materials were used for road surfaces during the last century
Engineer: Usually they were gravel and macadam. Tars and asphalt were originally used only as coverings, but later they were used as binders and finally as hot mixtures.
Mr. Jones: Concrete is a modem material as far as road - building goes, isn’ t it
Engineer: Relatively speaking. But you might be surprised to know that a concrete road was built as early as 1893 in Ohio. But it was only 5 miles long. More extensive projects were not undertaken until much later, around 1912 or 1913.
Mr. Jones: This was because of the increase in traffic
Engineer: That’ s right. Especially in the use of heavy tracks. More rigid pavements, such as concrete and brick, became a necessity. For light traffic, though, water-bound macadam, gravel, sand clay, and bituminous mixtures were still used.
Mr. Jones: What are turnpikes usually made of
En
A. the increase in traffic
B. the cost of other materials
C. the change of the climate
D. the construction of the roads

The Olympic Games were first held at Olympia in ancient Greece as ling ago as 776 B. C. They were held once every four years. The custom lasted for more than 1,000 years, but died out under the rulers of Rome and ceased with the decline of ancient Greek civilization. Then in 1896 the Games were revived. In that year, a Frenchman, Baron de Coubertin, decided to try to start the Games again. He wished to renew those ideals of excellence of body, mind and spirit shown in the classic Greek Olympics. He succeeded, and the modern Olympic Games began in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Since then the Olympics have grown steadily with more and more nations and athletes taking part. Because of the World Wars, they were not held in 1916, nor in 1940 and 1944. They have been regularly held ever since then.
The Olympics present the world’s most important athletic contests. Athletes from all over the world take part in the modern Olympic Games. Any nation may enter a team

Two businessmen were invited to dinner at the home of a college professor. One of the men did not have much education and was worried that he might make, a fool of himself, but his friend said, "Don’t worry. Just do what I do, and don’t talk about anything that you don’t really understand.
The first man managed to get through the dinner successfully, but by the end of the evening he had had a lot to drink, and began to get careless.
A guest asked him whether he liked Shakespeare, and he answered confidently, "It’s very pleasant, but I prefer Caco Cola." There was an uncomfortable silence in the room, and soon people began to leave.
When the two friends were out of the house, the second man said to his friend, "You certainly made a fool of yourself making that silly remark about Caeo Cola."
"What do you mean" asked the other man. "What was wrong with it"
