The Dead Return
A Festival for the Dead is held once a year in Japan. This festival is a cheerful occasion(场合), for on this day, the dead are said to return to their homes and they are welcomed by the living.
As they are expected to be hungry after their long journey, food is laid out for them. Specially-made lanterns are hung outside each house to help the dead to find their way. In towns that are near the sea, the tiny lanterns which had been hung in the street the night before, are placed into the water when the festival is over. [单项选择]Governing bodies of the American colonies raised questions about land distribution and use soon after winning independence. A 1785 law provided for surveying the west, with the intention of opening up land for family farms. Areas between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, for example, were allowed to become states on equal terms with the original thirteen as soon as their populations reached a certain level. The lands were to be sold at $ 2. 50 per hectare.
Most of the settlers who braved the many dangers of western expansion did not have money to pay for land. Often they settled as occupiers of land without any clear title to their farms. After becoming established, these settlers campaigned to get the law changed so that some of the land was declared free, while other lands could be bought at a minimal price and paid for over a period of years. Successive laws culminated in the Homestead Act of 1862, giving free land to prospective settlers provided they agreed to farm the land or

[单项选择]Our bodies are wonderfully skilful at maintaining balance. When the temperature jumps, we sweat to cool down. When our blood pressure falls, our hearts pound to compensate. As it turned out, though, our natural state is not a steady one. Researchers are finding that everything from blood pressure to brain function varies rhythmically with the cycles of sun, moon and seasons. And their insights are yielding new strategies for keeping away such common killers as heart disease and cancer. Only one doctor in 20 has a good knowledge of the growing field of "chronotherapeutics," the strategic use of time (chronoa) in medicine. But according to a new American Medical Association poll, three out of four are eager to change that. "The field is exploding", says Michael Smolensky. "Doctors used to look at us like, ’What space ship did you guys get off of’ Now they’re thirsty to know more."
In medical school, most doctors learn that people with chronic conditions should take their medicine at
