The celebration of Mother’s Day can be traced to the times of ancient Greece when tribute was paid to "Rhea", the Mother of the Gods. The next recorded tribute to Mother’s was during the 17a century when England celebrated "Mothering Sunday" on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In America, Julia Ward Howe, the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", suggested the idea of Mother’s Day in 1872.
However, it is Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia who was credited with creating Mother’s Day in 1905. She wanted to pay tribute to her mother who had tried to establish Mother’s Friendship Day to help heal the scars of the Civil War in America. In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to adopt a formal holiday to recognize Mothers. A year later nearly every state officially marked the day of celebration. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother’s Day as a national holiday to be held on the second Sunday of May.
