Listening out for whale song is one way that ships can avoid colliding with whales. But what do you do if the whales aren’t singing One answer, developed by researchers in the Canary Islands, is to focus on the way the giant creatures mask the clamour of ocean noise.
No one knows how many whales are killed by ships each year, but collisions are thought to ac- count for up to a third of unnatural deaths. For the northern right whale, this means one or two individuals every year, and with only 300 animals left, that’s an unacceptable loss. There are three global hot spots for whale collisions: northern right whales are at risk in the Atlantic off the east coast of the US and Canada, fin whales in the Mediterranean, and sperm whales off the Canary Islands.
Last year, the Massachusetts-based international Fund for Animal Welfare attached hydro- phones to buoys and successfully listened out for right whale song in the North Atlantic. But since right whales

The deadly bird flu so far has claimed
a confirmed 18 lives in Vietnam and Thailand, though the suspected toll is
higher at 23. Millions of birds have been culled across Asia in an effort to
stop the spread of the disease. The U.N. health agency said that testing of
virus material from a 23-year-old Vietnamese woman who died of the HSN1 avian
flu virus showed no human transmission. The woman and her 30-year-old sister
were confirmed victims of bird flu. Their brother died of a flu-like illness but
because his body was cremated (焚化), there was no chance to test for the virus.
"WHO has today received the results from a study of virus isolated from a
23-year-old woman who is part of a family cluster in Vietnam under investigation
as the first possible instance of human-to-human transmission," the agency said
in a statement po A. the whole Asia was influenced by the bird flu B. the bird flu virus won’t transmit among human even if it mutate C. H5N1 virus will no longer in existence after two years D. the virus transmission among poultry can be controlled in about two years 我来回答: 提交
