[单项选择]Passage One
There is a difference between science and technology. Science is a method of answering theoretical questions; technology is a method of solving practical problems. Science has to do with discovering the facts and relationships between observable phenomena in nature and with establishing theories that serve to organize these facts and relationships; technology has to do with tools, techniques, and procedures for implementing the finding of science.
Another distinction between science and technology has to do with the progress in each.
Progress in science excludes the human factor. Scientists, who seek to comprehend the universe and know the truth within the highest degree of accuracy and certainty, cannot pay attention to their own or other people’s likes or dislikes or to popular ideas about the fitness of things. What scientists discover may shock or anger people-as did Darwin’s theory of evolution. But even an unpleasant truth is more

Passage One
Passage One I have an
infatuation(迷恋)with autumn. The colors of the season, and the smells, have
always thrilled me. I have always found joy in this time of year. The last few
autumns of my life, however, I recollect in shades of gray rather than cheerful
oranges and yellows. When I became a single mother, every aspect
of life took on new meaning. Since I was used to carrying out most of the
parental duties without much help during my marriage, I truly did not foresee
how different parenting would become after the marriage was over. But suddenly I
realized I was a statistic. The daily routine was not changed so much; it was
the angle at which I had begun to look at life. I believed my
ex-husband’s lawyer was tracking every grade the children made, and I was under
a microscope in this new town where the children and I A. The author moved to a new place. B. The climate changed greatly in the last few years. C. In the last few years, the author’s mood changed. D. There were some natural disasters.
[单项选择] Passage Five
If there is one thing scientists have
to hear, it is that the game is over. Raised on the belief of an endless voyage
of discovery, they recoil (畏缩) from the suggestion that most of the best things
have already been located. If they have, today’s scientists can hope to
contribute no more than a few grace notes to the symphony of science.
A book to be published in Britain this week, The End of Science, argues
persuasively that this is the case. Its author, John Horgan, is a senior writer
for Scientific American magazine, who has interviewed many of today’s leading
scientists and science philosophers. The shock of realizing that science might
be over came to him, he says, when he was talking to Oxford mathematician and
physicist Sir Roger Penrose. The End of Science provoked a wave
of denunciation (谴责) in the United States la A. most of the best things have already been changed B. most of the best things remain to be changed C. there have never been so many best things waiting to be discovered D. most secrets of the world have already been discovered

Passage One
As one works with color in a practical or experimental way, one is impressed by two apparently unrelated facts. Color as seen is a mobile changeable thing depending to a large extent on the relationship of the color to other colores seen simultaneously. It is not fixed in its relation to the direct stimulus which creates it. On the other hand, the properties of surfaces that give rise to color do not seem to change greatly under a wide variety of illumination colors, usually (but not always) looking much the same in artificial light as in daylight. Both of these effects seem to the due in large part to the mechanism of color adaptation mentioned earlier.
When the eye is fixed on a colored area, there is an immediate readjustment of the sensitivity of the eye to color in and around the area viewed. This A. the color mechanism of the eye in use at the time of each viewing B. what kind of viewing had immediately preceded each of the viewings C. the properties of the surface being viewed D. whether the object was seen in artificial or natural light
