[单项选择]As colleges and universities send another wave of graduates out into the world this spring, thousands of other job seekers with liberal-arts degrees like Martin’s find themselves in a similarly difficult situation. True enough, this is an era of record-breaking lows in unemployment. But technology companies, which are contributing the lion’s share (最多的部分) of new jobs, are simultaneously declaring a shortage of qualified workers.
It’s no surprise that high-tech companies rarely hire liberal-arts graduates. The need for technical expertise is so universal that even retailers are demanding such skills. "Company-wide, we’re looking for students with specific information-systems skills", says David McDearmon, director of field human resources at Dollar Tree Stores. "Typically we avoid independent-college students who don’t have them".

American Universities and Colleges
Higher education is given in colleges and universities. The average course is four years. Students choose their "major" and a number of "electives". Typically, an undergraduate student has to earn a number of "credits", about 120, to receive the Bachelor’s degree at the end of four years’ study. One credit usually equals one hour of class per week in a single course which lasts 10 to 16 weeks-the length of a "semester". About half of the students are awarded the Bachelor’s degree when they leave university. Then the students may go on to graduate school and with a year or two of further study get a master’s degree. After another year or two of study and research, they may get a still higher degree as doctor of philosophy. Higher education trains people to become teachers, nurses, engineers, dentists or do other professional work. Lawyers and doctors must go to school longer than four years.

American universities and colleges look at several things when they consider the admission of international students. First, they check the grades that students had in high school or in any previous college or university. Second, schools consider English ability. Most schools require students to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL test). This test is given regularly in many countries. Finally, schools look at the finances of the students. International students can’t work while they are studying in the US, so they must show schools that they have enough money for tuition and living expenses.
