Television is one of today’s most
powerful and widespread means of mass communication. It directly influences our
lives on both a short and long-term basis; it brings worldwide situations into
our homes; it affords extensive opportunities for acquiring higher education;
and it performs these tasks in a convenient yet effective manner. We are all
aware of the popularly accepted applications of television, particularly those
relative to entertainment and news broadcasting. Television, however, has also
been a vital link in unmanned deep space exploration (such as the Voyager I and
Ⅱ missions), in providing visions from hazardous areas (such as proximity to
radioactive materials or environments) in underwater research, in viewing storms

Why has the kiwi survived while its
relatives the moas have become extinct One reason, I think, is that it has
adopted nocturnal(夜间活动的) habits. Kiwis are not normally about in the daytime.
During the daylight hours they lie up in hiding, where enemies have no hope of
finding them. Their coloration protects them; the strange drab(黄褐色的) feathering,
so unlike that of most birds, gives them a cloak(伪装)of invisibility while they
sleep. And when night falls, out they come to scratch in the ground and find
worms and feed to their hearts’ content. They couldn’t do that
so effectively if they didn’t have another peculiarity that I have not mentioned
yet. The nostrils(鼻孔) of most birds open high up near the base of the
beak(猛禽的嘴), but the kiwi wears his nostrils right near the tip of the long bill.

Why is there no risk to the customer
when a hank prints the customer’s name to his cheques When
anyone opens a current account at a bank, he is lending the bank money,
repayment of which he may demand at any time, either in cash or by drawing a

concept, the bank and its customer owe a large number of obligations to one
another. Many of these obligations can give rise to problems and complications
but a bank customer, unlike, say, a buyer of goods, cannot complain that the
law is loaded against him. The bank must obey its customer’s
instructions, and not those of anyone else. When, for exa A. must always be in credit B. can’t draw any money if you’re overdrawn C. can draw money without notice D. can’t pay money to anyone else

About one million years ago, the Ice
Age began. The Ice Age was a long period of time in which four great glaciers
pushed southward to cover almost all the upper half of North America, and then
melted away. Each glacier was a thick sheet of ice and snow that spread out from
a centre near what is now Hudson Bay in Canada. The winters were long, and the
cool summers were too short to melt much of the ice and snow. The ever-growing
sheet built up to a thickness of two miles at its centre. As all
glaciers do, these great glaciers slid. They pushed down giant trees in their
paths and scraped the earth bare of soil. Many animals moved farther south to
escape. Others stayed and were destroyed. When winters of little
snow came, the summer sun cut into the edges of the ice sheets. As the glaciers
melted, rocks, soil and other things A. 1,000 years B. 100 years C. 1,000,000 years D. 11,000 years
