[单项选择]
Air Pollution and Acid Rain

The increasing variety and prevalence of pollution presents the world with many extremely daunting problems, air pollution in particular ranks among the most serious. In the following text, air pollution and acid rain caused by automobiles will be discussed. Certain solutions to the problem will be provided in the conclusion.
It is widely known that cars are the main cause of air pollution in cities, accounting for 60% to 90% of all air pollution. This will get worse as the number of cars increases in urban areas. How do cars cause air pollution First we must examine how a car works. There’s a mixture of petrol in the car’s internal combustion engine which create the force for the automobile to move. Unfortunately, in this process there are some poisonous chemicals which remain; these poisonous chemicals mainly come out of the car through the exhaust, it’s not just what comes out of the car e
A. solvable
B. frightening
C. promising
D. intrepid

[简答题]

Acid rain, is a form of air pollution, currently a subject of great controversy because of widespread environmental damage for which it has been blamed. It forms when oxides of sulfur and nitrogen combine with atmospheric moisture to yield sulfuric and nitric acids, which may then be carded long distances from their source before they are deposited by rain. The pollution many also take the form of snow or fog or be precipitated in dry forms. In fact, although the term "acid rain" has been in use for more than a century — it is derived from atmospheric studies that were made in the region of Manchester, England — the more accurate scientific term would be "acid deposition." The dry form of such precipitation is just as damaging as the liquid form, especially to trees and structures. Furthermore, some of the pollutants also associated with acid rain are not themselves acidic.
The problem of acid rain may be said to have originated with the Indust

[填空题]results in "Acid rain"
[单项选择] Researchers generally agree that acid rain arises primarily from the burning of coal and oil. The emissions contain oxides of nitrogen and sulfur, which can be carried hundreds of miles on the prevailing westernly winds. They eventually return to earth as dry gases and particulates and react with ground waters to form nitride or sulfuric acid. They may also be converted to the acids in the atmosphere by chemical processes that are still not fully understood. However the acids are formed, they have already been charged with a substantial list of damages. Corrosion of metal structures in windward areas of the country has been well-documented, but is a relatively minor entry on the list. Other forms of damage are far more insidious and longer-lasting. There is evidence, for example, that the acids leach heavy metals--aluminum, lead, and mercury-from the soil, which then poison plant roots and deprive them of vital nutrients. In lakes and rivers the acid alters the blood chemistry i
A. Chemical processes in the atmosphere.
B. Dry gases and particulates.
C. The burning of coal and oil.
D. The prevailing wind.
[填空题]Acid rain problems are worse in the northern hemisphere because there is more ______ in this region.
[单项选择]Pollutants in the atmosphere can cause acid rain (rain with high acidity levels). While acid rain in itself cannot significantly affect the acidity of bodies of water into which it falls, it can greatly increase the acidity of nearby lakes by increasing the amount of decaying matter on a forest floor. A recent increase in the acidity of the water in Forest Lake, therefore, surely indicates that the rain failing nearby has become more acid.
Which of the following, if tree, most seriously weakens the argument
A. Even in areas without significant amounts of acid rain, most lakes in regions with vegetation similar to the vegetation around Forest Lake have acidity levels higher than those of other lakes.
B. Recent air-quality tests in the region around Forest Lake have revealed a slight increase in the amount of pollutants in the air.
C. Large-scale logging, which was recently begun in the forest surrounding Forest Lake, has increased the amount of decaying matter on the forest floor.
D. There is some disagreement among scientists about exactly how pollutants in the atmosphere cause acid rain.
E. (E) Decaying matter exists on all forest floors and is an important factor in maintaining the healthy growth of the forests.
