My family and I recently returned from a trip to Alaska, a place that combines supernatural beauty with a breathtaking amount of bear risks. I’ll start with some facts at a glance:
WHERE ALASKA IS: Way the hell far from you. Beyond Mars.
HOW YOU GET THERE: You sit in a variety of airplanes for most of your adult life.
WHAT THEY HAVE THERE THAT WILL TRY TO KILL YOU: Bears.
I am quite serious about this. Although Alaska is now an official state in the United States with modem conveniences such as rental cars and frozen yogurt, it also allows a large number of admitted bears to stride freely, and nobody seems to be the least bit alarmed about this. In fact, the Alaskans seem to be proud of it. You walk into a hotel or department store, and the first thing you see is a glass case containing a stuffed bear the si

In my early childhood I received no formal religious education. I did, of course, received that ethical and moral training that moral and conscientious parents give their children. When I was about ten years old, my parents decided that it would be good for me to receive some formal religious instruction and to study the Bible, if for no other reason than that a knowledge of both is essential to the understanding of literature and culture.
As lapsed Catholics, they sought a group which had as little doctrine and dogma as possible, but what they considered having good moral and ethical values. After some searching, they joined the local Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. Dear Ms. Green,
I was very concerned when I received your letter of yesterday complaining that the central heating system in your new house had not been completed by the date promised.
On referring to our earlier correspondence I find that I had mistakened the date for completion. The fault is entirely mine and I deeply regret that it should have occurred.
I realize the inconvenience our oversight must be causing you and will do everything possible to avoid any further delay. I have already given instructions for the work to have priority and the engineers working on the job to be placed on overtime. These arrangements should see the installation completed by next weekend.
Yours faithfully,
William Bosh

When I told other Chinese that I was studying history at Yale, many talked as if I were a slacker evading science and engineering programs, or a loser who couldn’t make it in computer science or electrical engineering; others wondered why I had chosen such an impractical subject.
Both responses reflect the deeply ingrained prejudice of many Chinese ag
