Passage 2
Every year, the American Lung Association (ALA) releases its annual report card on smog, and every year it gives an "F" to over half the nation’s counties and cities. When ALA’s "State of the Air 2002" recently came out, dozens of credulous local journalists once again took the bait, ominously reporting that their corner of the nation received a failing grade. The national coverage was no better, repeating as fact ALA’s statement that it is "gravely concerned" about air quality, and neglecting to solicit the views of even one scientist with a differing view. Too bad, because this report card says a lot less about actual air quality than it does about the tactics and motives of the ALA.
The very fact that 60 percent of counties were given an ’F’ seems to be alarmist. This is particularly true given that smog levels have been trending downward
A. trusting
B. suspicious
C. critical
D. hesitant

[单项选择]Passage Five
Every year gray whales migrate from the Bering Sea in Alaska to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico.
Eleven gray whales have died in the San Francisco Bay in the last three weeks. No one knows why the whales are dying.
Last year 270 whales died along the whales’ migration route. Many people think starvation is the cause. This year the dead whales seem to have more blubber (fat) on them.
Twenty years ago, the gray whale was listed as an endangered species.
Some scientists think that the larger number of whales makes it hard to find enough food. More whales create more pressure on the food supply, a supply that some scientists say may have dwindled as a result of the warm waters of El Nino.
Most of the whales have been dead for many days before they are found and studied. This makes it hard to find the reason for deat
A. Pneumonia.
B. Brain infection.
C. Over-population.
D. Over-eating.
[单项选择]Passage 2
Every year as Christmas time rushes in, I get frantic inquiries from readers asking about the legality of giving handguns as gifts. Most of these folks are just like me: they don’t get around to their Christmas shopping until it’s almost Christmas Eve. So when they run into the legal tangles surrounding firearms transfer, they don’t have time to find solutions before Santa’s big day.
The process can be very complicated and time-consuming, and in some particular state and local jurisdictions it is, sadly, close to being not worth the trouble. The most unfortunate thing from the Christmas-gift point of view is that the legal requirements surrounding firearms transfer make it nearly impossible to give someone a gun as a surprise. Santa can’t just leave it under the tree: he’d be committing a federal crime.
First let’s deal with f
A. is asked about the legal solution of firearms transfer
B. is requested to give handguns as gifts
C. makes an investigation into handgun transfer
D. helps readers contact gun dealers
[简答题]How many earthquakes every year?
[填空题]Earthquake
Every year earthquakes are responsible for a large number of deaths and a vast amount of destruction in various parts of the world. Most of these damaging earthquakes occur either in a narrow belt which surrounds the Pacific Ocean or in a line which extends from Burma to the Alps in Europe. Some of the destruction is directly caused by the quake itself. An example of this is the collapse of buildings as a result of the quake itself. Other damage results from landslides or major fires which are initiated by the quake.
These are about a million quakes a year. Fortunately, however, not all of them are destructive. The intensity of an earthquake is measured on the Richter Scale, which goes from upward. The highest scale recorded to date is 8.9. Major damage generally occurs from quakes ranging upward from 6.0.
The actual cause of the quake itself is the breaking of rocks at or below the earth’s surface. This is produced by pressure which scientists believe
